Common dryer problems we fix
When a dryer stops working properly, it is almost always heat, tumble, or airflow. Here is what fails, and which part it points to. One note up front: a dryer that runs hot and takes forever is often a blocked vent, and a clogged vent is a real fire risk, so it is worth taking seriously.
Dryer runs but will not heat
No heat is our most common dryer call. On an electric dryer it is usually the heating element or a blown thermal fuse. On a gas dryer it is normally the igniter, which weakens with age until it can no longer light the burner, or the gas valve coils. A tripped thermal fuse often points back to restricted airflow, so we check the vent while we are there.
Dryer takes far too long to dry
Clothes still damp after a full cycle almost always means airflow is choked: a lint-clogged vent line, a crushed vent hose behind the machine, or a failing blower wheel. A worn moisture sensor can also end cycles early or run them long. Clearing the vent often fixes both the drying time and the safety risk in one go.
Dryer will not tumble
A drum that will not turn while the motor hums is usually a snapped belt, a seized idler pulley, or worn drum rollers. A dryer that is dead silent may be the drive motor or the start switch. We carry belts and rollers on the van for a same-visit fix on most models.
Dryer shuts off early or overheats
Shutting off after a few minutes points to a failing thermal fuse, a bad thermistor or moisture sensor, or an overheat caused, again, by a blocked vent. Overheating is worth fixing quickly, both for the clothes and for safety.
Dryer is loud
Rumbling, thumping or squealing usually comes from worn rollers, drum glides, or the idler pulley. Left too long, these strain the belt and motor, so it is cheaper to fix the noise early.

Is it worth fixing a dryer?
This depends on the total cost of the repair and age of the dryer versus the cost of buying a new dryer. If the cost of the repair is higher than the value of the dryer, it would not be worth it to continue with the repair. If you need help figuring out if it is worth it to repair your dryer, a service technician can assist you.
What do you do when your dryer stops working?
If your dryer is not working, the first thing you can do is check to see if it is still plugged in correctly, and check the thermal fuse for continuity – if it shows no continuity, it will need to be replaced. There are other issues that can cause your dryer to stop working, but it is best to be assessed correctly by a technician.
How do I know if my dryer fuse is blown?
You will have to check to see if the fuse is still working or not. You can do this by unplugging your dryer and locating the thermal fuse. Once you have located the fuse, disconnect it from the wires and use a multimeter to check the fuse for continuity. If it does not show continuity, the fuse has blown and needs to be replaced.
Why is my dryer not drying my clothes?
If your dryer is not drying your clothes it could be a number of different issues, but the easiest thing to check yourself is the air vents and ducts. Sometimes these air vents can become clogged and cause poor airflow in the dryer. If the air vent is not clogged and your dryer is still not drying, it’s best to have a technician come take a look at your dryer.
