When Your Dryer Refuses To Start

What the customer reported

A home in Burnaby called us because the dryer had lost power completely. It wouldn’t turn on at all, with no tumbling, no heat and no response when the customer pressed start. When a dryer is totally dead like that, people often assume it’s the plug, the breaker or the thermal fuse, and those are all fair places to look. We checked what we could from the outside first, then opened the machine up.

What the diagnosis found

After taking off the top panel, we tested the electrical components one by one. A thermal fuse is a common culprit in a dryer that won’t start, since it’s a safety part that cuts power when the machine overheats. In this case it wasn’t the fuse. The failed part was the main control board. That distinction matters, because replacing a thermal fuse is a small job, while a control board is a different repair entirely. Testing first meant the right part went in the first time.

The part and the repair

We swapped out the old circuit board for an OEM replacement, which means a part made to match the original equipment. We then reconnected the wiring harnesses, taking care that each plug went back where it belonged. To finish, we verified the cycle functions. The dryer went back to heating and spinning normally, which is the real test, because a board can sometimes power up and still fail to send the signal to the heating element or the drum motor.

How to avoid this fault

Clean the lint filter after every load and have the vent duct cleared out periodically, since a restricted vent makes a dryer run hotter and puts extra strain on its safety parts and electronics. Avoiding an overloaded drum also helps, because it makes the motor and board work harder.

Why the control board matters

The main control board in a dryer receives your cycle selection and then switches the motor, the heater and the sensors on and off at the right moments. It also monitors things like temperature, so the machine can shut itself down if something goes wrong. Heat, vibration and power surges can all age electronic components over time, and a board that fails often takes the whole machine’s power with it. The layout differs between models, and some dryers are gas while others are electric, so the exact parts involved aren’t the same everywhere.
