What the diagnosis found

A dishwasher won’t run with the door open, so the door latch and its wiring are always part of the check. On this one we opened the front door panel to get at the main control module and the door latch harness. The failed part turned out to be the control board itself. The wiring connection also had to be secured properly, because a loose or poorly seated connection in that harness can cause the same dead-controls symptom as a bad board.

The part and the repair

We replaced the failed control board and secured the wiring connection. Once everything was back together, the dishwasher powered up and the door locked properly. We then ran a full test cycle to confirm it behaved normally from start to finish, instead of just checking that the lights came on. A short test would only tell you the unit has power, while a full cycle shows whether the board, the latch and the rest of the machine are working together.

How to avoid this fault

Close the door gently and make sure nothing, like a pot handle or a long utensil, is stopping it from latching fully, since a door that’s forced or slammed can wear the latch and its connections over time. Wiping the door edges now and then, so food residue doesn’t build up around the latch, also helps.

The control board is the brain of a modern dishwasher. It reads the door switch, decides when to fill, heat, wash and drain, and sends power to each of those parts in turn. Because it sits behind the door panel, it can be exposed to steam and moisture over the years, and electronic parts don’t always fail in a way you can see.
